DIY felt

This is a Part 1 of 3 part series for this lovely set of cushions that I made for our son for his new toddler room. See part 2 and part 3.

We recently made a big boy room for our son and moved his cot bed into the new baby room (due in September!). He is now sleeping in a single bed and it is so exciting because I got to decorate two whole rooms! (Learn more about how we moved him in a big boy bed here.) As we already had the curtains with a woodland creatures theme and some other wall art, I decided to carry on with this theme and make him a little quiet corner with cushions, blankets, and a small mattress where he can look through his books or just sit there and play. As I didn’t want to spend too much money on all these fancy cushions, I saw these cases in IKEA. They’re very cheap and I decided that I could make something for him to go in with the theme of the room.

So, for this tutorial I’ll take you step by step to create this lovely cushion case. All patterns are included, so that you can download them and make your own!

For this craft you will need:

  • Cushion case;
  • Hot glue gun;
  • Dark and light brown, white, black felt;
  • The downloadable pattern, and
  • Needle, thread, scissors.

Gather all your materials, print, and cut out the template.

This is how your bear will look before you stitch all the pieces together.

Use a running stitch to secure the light felt from the bear’s ears to its head, then stitch together the head, the back, and the tummy.

Do the same for the eyes, arm, and tail.

Stitch the nose and hot glue the eyebrows (I found them to be too thin for sewing).

Stitch together the remaining parts and then the whole bear to the cushion case. You can use the same colour thread as the felt, or a contrasting white one for a more handmade look.
